In 2017, there were more than 300,000 procedures performed in the U.S. For the best results; clients want the best breast surgeon they can find to do the surgery properly. There are many professional associations that surgeons can belong to, but there is only one that really matters.

When choosing a breast surgeon in Dallas, clients should select a surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). This is the only medical board in the United States that certifies plastic surgeons. This certification demonstrates the surgeon has completed the education needed to be certified by the board.

In order to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a breast surgeon must meet all the requirements, including graduating with a medical degree which usually requires approximately eight years of higher education. The breast surgeon must spend at least five years in residency training at a hospital with three of those years in general surgery and two years in plastic surgery. After residency, the surgeon must have an independent practice at least two years.

An ABPS certification also requires that the breast surgeon complete a specialty examination. The surgeon cannot be board certified until he or she passes the test and meets the requirements of practice.

An ABPS certification is not for life. After a surgeon has been certified, they must be re-certified every so often to demonstrate they are knowledgeable about the latest advancements and techniques in their field.

There are many aspects of breast surgery that must be considered when choosing if breast surgery is the right thing to do. Choosing a breast surgeon can be difficult, but one of the things a patient should always make sure of is that the breast surgeon in Dallas is ABPS certified.
