When you own a specialty business, everything seems to be a little more complicated. Many “off the shelf” products don’t work for your products or can’t support your needs. That’s why it’s worth the time to research vendors before you buy.

Many vendors are set up to provide generalized products or services. These vendors might want your business, but might not really be in a position to meet your needs. When you need specialty products like custom EMI gaskets or tailored die cut foam tape, a “one size fits all” approach to business is likely to leave you with nothing but frustration. Here are some tips to find those vendors that can meet your specialized needs.

Talk to your competitors or other companies in similar industries. You might not spend a lot of time talking to your competition, but this is one time when it might pay off.

Spend a little time with potential vendors. Many situations, such as choosing custom EMI gaskets, require a special design. Discussing those needs with the vendor’s designer can give you a good feel for whether or not the company has the expertise and the product line to meet your needs.

Ask to see samples. Talk with your potential vendors about providing samples of products that might work for you or that are similar to a product that might work for you. For example, if you’re looking for custom EMI gaskets, ask to see other gaskets custom made for a client. While these examples won’t work for you, they will give you an idea of the vendor’s capabilities.

Once you’ve found a custom vendor, you’re sure to agree that the research time was well spent. Having a partner that can make a product exactly as you require it certainly makes the business a whole lot easier.
