Group fitness classes can be a great way to immerse yourself in a new activity, meet other fitness enthusiasts and establish an enjoyable, long-term fitness routine. Group fitness classes in Los Angeles are vast and varied; offering a wide range of classes that cater to just about everyone’s taste preferences and athletic abilities. If you are new to a fitness facility, or are just looking to pop into a class, here are a few helpful hints to get you started.

Talk to the Instructor

Jumping into a group fitness class can be an intimidating experience for just about anyone – especially for those who are completely new to the workout scene. It is easy to convince yourself that you “don’t know what you are doing”, or “aren’t going to keep up with everyone else”. A simple way to eradicate these beliefs is to speak directly with the instructor prior to beginning a class. Group fitness instructors are there to assist you in any way that they can. Their mission is to ensure you get the best – and most enjoyable – workout possible in the allotted amount of time. If you speak with them and inform them that you are new to the class, they will undoubtedly do their best to accommodate your needs and make sure that you are practicing correct form, getting a good workout in and, most importantly, having fun.

Move to the Front

In a class full of strangers, many of us have the natural tendency to hide behind rows of people and quietly follow along from the back of the room. With group fitness classes in Los Angeles, you are encouraged to find a spot up front and center so that you can really immerse yourself in the activity. After you have spoken with the instructor, make sure you find a comfortable spot for yourself in the middle of the classroom, or towards the front where the instructor can see you. This is the best way to ensure that the instructor can help you out with any moves you might be having trouble with; as well as ensure proper visibility on your end. Don’t worry about what other people behind you are trying to do – the beauty of group fitness is that you are all there to learn, work and sweat together!

Know When to Stop

One of the most important things to remember when beginning an exercise routine, or when incorporating a new exercise into an existing regimen, is to listen to your body. This is critical! As you progress into more advanced level fitness classes, your instructor may encourage you to experiment with more difficult movements at much higher intensities. While this is a great way to get in shape and maintain a healthy fitness level, you want to be sure that you stop if you start to have trouble following along, breathing or if you have any signs of pain. Being able to adequately listen to your body – and know when to stop – is critical to developing life-long, healthy habits. Visit here for more details.
