According to Ayurveda, good health is a condition of the body where it is clear of toxins, the organs are functioning correctly, the emotions are controlled, and the mind is at peace. Our body can accumulate toxins in a stressful environment. These toxins can ultimately lead to diseases which may damage the individual’s health and well-being.

Panchakarma Therapy is used for the detoxification of the mind and the body. Its primary function is to strengthen the immune system and enable it to fight against the diseases. The combination of therapies is individualized based on specific factors such as age, digestive strength, Ayurvedic constitution type (Prakruti), imbalances (doshas), health conditions and others.

The therapies used in Panchakarma are:

  • Vamana Karma:
The medical vomiting or the medical emesis used in the treatment of Kapha disorders.
  • Virechana:

The purgation induced by Ayurvedic medicines.

  • Nasya:
The administration of Ayurvedic drugs in the nasal cavity to detoxify the upper nasal tract.
  • Basti:
Ayurvedic herbal enema to clear toxins from the lower colon.
  • Swedana:
    The herbalised steam bath.
  • Raktamokshana:
It is an effective blood purification therapy where small quantities of blood are removed to neutralise the Pitta toxins of the blood-borne diseases.

The supportive treatments in the Panchakarma Therapy include:

  • Abhyanga and Pizichili
  • Shirodhara
  • Udvartana or power massage
  • Marma therapy

The benefits of Panchakarma Therapy are:

  • It boosts the body’s immunity levels.
  • It improves the strength of the body.
  • It boosts longevity by slowing down the aging process.
  • It reduces stress by improving relaxation and tolerance.
  • It assists in balancing all the three doshas (Vata, pitta, and Kapha).

Panchakarma Therapy also helps in curing numerous diseases such as chronic fever, bronchial asthma, skin disorders, psychological disorders, oedema, chronic allergies and nasal congestion.

During the Panchakarma Therapy, certain restrictions have to be strictly followed such as using only warm water for drinking and bathing, not indulging in sexual intercourse and not sleeping during daytime. Only then can the treatment be carried out effectively.
