If you are considering a career in the medical field, but you are not a big fan of blood, becoming a sterile tech could very well be just the job for you.  This is a job which is highly satisfying for individuals who want to feel as if they are helping people.  You will also have a great start on a career path that has room for advancement.  You can complete a course for certification in as little as ten weeks in which you will receive instruction in a classroom setting, work in a lab setting  plus practical hands on training.

Mandatory Requirement and Helpful Traits

It is required that you be at least eighteen years of age, have a high school diploma or your GED and be able to pass a background check.  Some people may find the thought of a check intrusive, but since you will be working around narcotics and valuable equipment, among other reasons, it is an important component.  To be good at your job you should be able to work well with others and have excellent communication skills.  It is important to be able to work well in stressful situations, to remain calm and organized.

The Certification Exam

The CBSPD exam consists of 100 questions pertains to subjects such as Disinfection Procedures, Sterilization, Handling of Instruments, Proper Cleaning Procedures, Safety and Quality Control and Ethics.  The first time you receive your certification it will be valid for five years.  To become recertified, you receive points for things like working and continuing your education.  You can them move on to become a nurse, an EMT or a multitude of other options in the medical field.  Everything you need to learn in order to pass a certification exam, you will learn though taking a course through Altamont Healthcare.
