In order to decide to seek treatment, one probably needs to accept the fact that there is a problem in the first place. One good way to think about this, is to be able to truthfully take an account of how things are going in various major life areas. Like for example, are there problems at home because of drugs or alcohol? Problems at work? Problems with friends and other family members? If a person is honest, he or she may be able to decide that there is an actual problem. Some folks say, a person needs to reach “rock bottom,” before there is enough motivation for the person to want to change and have things be better overall.

What about others in our lives and the possibility that some have problems with drugs or alcohol? What are some warning signs? It mainly has to do with, how much disruption there is with all of the various activities of daily life and compared with a person’s normal level of functioning. Not making major obligations such as showing up on time to work and maintaining production at work is a sign there is something wrong. Spending a significant amount of time in bed is a warning sign, particularly if this is a departure from a normal routine. Being unusually moody and irritable is also a sign something is wrong.

So, knowing if and when there is a problem which can point to a substance abuse issue is really crucial, because then, the person can seek treatment, before it’s too late. There are warning signs which can help in this regard. Then, if the person is honest, perhaps he or she will not have to reach rock bottom before help can be obtained.
